In Dan Heath’s book Upstream, he masterfully discusses the flaws in how we focus too much on solely reacting to hazards, instead of also working proactively “upstream” to lessen or even eliminate these problems before they occur.  At The RAK Academy, we applaud all the amazing upstream efforts being done to prevent Active Killers, but sadly recognize that our “downstream” response training is still very much needed today to save as many lives as possible.

One of the most effective upstream efforts that I’m aware of is the Choose Love Movement, founded by Scarlett Lewis, who is the mother of Jesse Lewis, who was murdered at Sandy Hook.  Their social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development programs are simple, powerful and easily understood.  They also can and are being taught to all ages and all demographics across the world.  These provide upstream skills that I believe will decrease hate and harm, some of which can lead to Active Killers.  In addition, SEL also provides a framework for overcoming the emotional and physical challenges that are present after an Active Killer incident through nurturing, healing and love.  Therefore, the Choose Love Movement is a powerful upstream and downstream tool that I whole heartedly support because it makes our world a kinder and safer place.
